Matthew 17:1-9
“This is my Son, the Beloved, with whom I am
well pleased; listen to him…”
Many years ago, a parishioner at the church I
was then serving in the American Midwest,
announced to me one Sunday morning that she
was going to be taking a class in Christology. It
sounded like a brilliant idea to me, and I told her
so. “That is wonderful, Janet,” I said. “You will
be learning all about the meaning of Christ in our
world today as saviour and messiah. In fact,” I continued enthusiastically,
“Christology was one of my favourite classes in seminary.” Janet gave me a
funny look. “No, Father Frank,” she said. “Christology. You know. How crystals
affect and determine our spiritual life.”
Today’s story from the Gospel of Matthew is a lesson in, well, Gospel Christo
